The Currier Times has learned that a woman found murdered in the passenger seat of a car at Logan Airport earlier this month was a December, 2020 graduate of Curry’s Nursing program. Margaret (Maggie) Mbitu, 31, of Whitman, was reported missing two days before her body was found. Police say she had been stabbed to death.

Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Mbitu’s boyfriend, Kevin Kangethe, 40, of Lowell, but they believe he has fled the country and may now be in Kenya.

Mbitu’s family has posted a GoFundMe page in order to help raise money to “alleviate the financial burden” for the family, the post states.

The family said Mbitu left her work around 11 p.m. on Monday, October 30th, and was reported missing the next day.

“Maggie was adored by many and it’s impossible to describe the impact she had on everyone during her lifetime or quantify the number of lives she touched,” the family wrote on the GoFundMe site. “She was a kind, selfless, compassionate nurse that was loved by many. Her death has left a huge burden to her family who have to tackle funeral costs, legal expenses to catch the suspect at large, and other arrangements that have unexpectedly risen to help bring justice for her.”

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said the suspect obtained an airplane ticket to Kenya early Tuesday morning and surveillance video shows him leaving the Central Parking Garage, where Mbitu was found inside the car. He was then seen on video checking into his flight for Kenya.

Authorities are working with Kenyan law officials to try and track down Kangethe.

Mbitu worked at BAMSI, a Brockton-based non-profit with a vision “of driving change and creating equal opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental and behavioral health challenges.”

In a statement on Facebook, BAMSI wrote, “She was warm, caring, and loved by everyone she worked with, both staff and the people she cared for in our group homes. As an agency, we are mourning over the loss of such an amazing young woman.”

According to an obituary at Keohane Funeral Home, funeral services are pending.
