After a summer of integrating new players through countless hours of practice, Curry Women’s Basketball kicked off the season with an astounding win over Dean College. And, as of this publication, they stand at an impressive 3-1 for the season to date.

Kylie McCarthy, a junior Elementary Education major from Beverly, MA was named captain by the rest of the team after always displaying a positive attitude and encouraging others on the team to give it their all.

“I’m honored that the team chose me to be their captain,” McCarthy said. “It makes me want to work even harder as a player and leader. In some ways, I felt like this first game was reassurance that I am doing something right as a captain.”

The crowd was in awe as Curry kept putting up points left and right against Dean. At half time, the score stood at 46-11 Curry and the team’s spirits were higher than ever.

Austin Kessler, a senior Software Development major attended this game as an avid fan of basketball.

“None of us had any doubt that Curry would win, but this was more than anyone could have expected,” said Kessler.

Emmy Cherry, a guard from Sturbridge, MA, is a Psychology student entering her third year on the team. Emmy is all about creating connections on the team and knew that this win would be the boost they needed to bring the team together.

“I remember my freshman year when older girls on the team took me under their wing,” said Cherry. “I love that I now get to be in that role for the new members of the team. This being our first game amped everyone up for a great season and really gave everyone a good look of what is to come.”

Over the weekend of November 11th, the team headed to Elmira, NY to compete in the Elmira Tipoff tournament. In their first game against Penn College, the girls took control of the game, putting the defensive pressure on and only letting 2 points get by them in the second quarter. At this point, the game had already been won. The whole entire team contributed to the win, as the fourth quarter was dominated by the underclassmen on the team.

Curry dominated Penn College winning 75-38 on Saturday elevating them into the next round.

On Sunday, the team was determined to keep their winning streak alive. They went into their final game of the tournament against Elmira College on Sunday.

Kasey Reeves, a freshman Nursing student from Millbury, MA, has been anticipating the
day she would play college basketball. Kasey saw playing time in all three of the games and felt like she was made to play for Curry.

“College basketball is different than what I thought it would be,” said Reeves. “I never realized how well crafted college teams were. It’s like this team was made to play together and I’m glad I get to be a part of that. These first few games were a great way to start the season and an overall good team bonding experience.”

Lauren Dunn, a sophomore Nursing student and guard from Hanson, MA, took the lead in the game against Dean by scoring 20 points for the Colonels.

“It felt good to be back out there with my team doing what I love,” said Dunn. “This game was the perfect introduction to the season and I don’t think I could’ve asked for anything more.”

Coming off winning the CCC Rookie of the Year last year, this may be another great season for Lauren Dunn as she went on to score the most points against Penn College, putting up 13 points on Saturday as well as 25 against Elmira.

Curry’s Women’s Basketball has high hopes for the season ahead of them and plans to give it their all every single game.
