For the first time in history, a Curry College sports team has reached the #1 ranking in the country. And the team to do it is Curry Men’s Hockey, with its impressive season that is showing the nation they are the team to beat for the NCAA Division III hockey championship.

United States College Hockey Online (USCHO), in their Sunday February 23rd rankings, has listed Curry as the #1 ranked team. This was based on “strength of schedule” or NPI, NCAA Power Index.

Curry finished the regular season with a win over Johnson and Wales, 3-1, the team’s 14th straight win, another Curry record. This earned Curry the #1 seed in the Conference of New England playoffs.

Last season, Curry took the eventual National Champions, Hobart, to the edge with a stunning four-overtime game that became one of the longest NCAA hockey games ever played. It was clear that Curry was one to be reckoned with as their Freshman phenom goalie, Shane Soderwall, tied the record for saves.

Now, they embark on the National Championship again, with the #1 ranking in the country. According to Curry Athletics, “As the regular season champions, the Colonels have earned themselves a bye in the first round of the CNE playoffs. Their next game will come next Saturday, March 1st, when they host a semifinal.”

In addition, Curry College Men’s Hockey broadcaster, Senior Communication major, Josh Bracken, will be participating in a broadcaster competition. The competition, run by D3 Hockey News, will open up for voting starting March 3rd. Click here to submit your vote.
