The water feed to a fire hydrant near the side entrance of the Student Center broke yesterday, causing the water supply on parts of the campus to become discolored, but the problem has since been fixed, campus and Milton officials said.

Public Safety roped off the area soon after the water feed broke yesterday morning. According to Joseph Lynch, director of public works for the town of Milton, campus water pipes were shut off in the afternoon.

“There is no more impact now,” Lynch said. “We scheduled a repair for overnight, when dorm and student center activity was down.”

Lynch said the repair occurred during 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. this morning, and that there shouldn’t be any more discolored water around campus. The only locations on campus that were affected by the water main break were Green House, Grey House and Brown House, as well as the Student Center.

Discolored water does not create any health hazard. According to a notice on the Town of Milton’s Web site from Aug. 3, 2012, discolored water “is a result from a small amount of iron in local pipes….While it is still safe for drinking, cooking and other uses, please note that iron will stain light colored items in your laundry, especially when bleach is used.”
