We are coming up on finals week at Curry College. This is when stress is at its highest for the Curry community with studying, work, and all sorts of hobbies that students are involved in.

The Curry Counseling Center will be open throughout finals week from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday during the week. Madison Murphy, a Staff Counselor, gave some tips and tricks on how to make it through finals week and the studying process.

“I think just making sure obviously, you’re getting good rest like 12 hours of sleep, you’re eating healthy, cutting your vegetables and hydrating, but also that you’re taking breaks and being kind and compassionate to yourself throughout the process,” said Murphy.

The average student should at least take 30-minute breaks between studying for finals, Murphy added.

Some of the students were already into their finals two to three weeks beforehand. But it also depends on the major as well. Taylor Conley, a senior Biochemistry major, said she had a plan of attack to keep herself organized.

“To prep for finals, I have been reviewing my notes and post work to help study for exams,” said Conley. “I have been slowly working on my final papers.”

Some students are not fully focused on finals because they have other assignments. It all depends on the pace that you best can succeed at and get through the next weeks. Lauren Phillips, a junior nursing student, was not too worried about it.

“Just taking things a day at a time, having good time management skills, and staying on the ball,” said Phillips.

But with this students need time to destress and be able to have a clear mind when going into finals week. Everyone has their way that they destress. There is only one priority over finals and that is making sure that you are mentally ready for them.

Rachel Newall, a junior Nursing student, has her destressing techniques.

“I am taking breaks while studying, I stop studying after dinner so I can relax and watch a show or movie,” Newall said. “I also go to the gym and have work throughout these three weeks so it also helps as a break and a stress relief.”

Madison Murphy had some final advice for all students going through the finals week process and are just now learning how to manage their time. Use the Counseling Center!

“Students have the opportunity to come to walk in or give us a call whenever they’re feeling stressed and that they’re not in this alone and they can talk about it and at least free up some space in their brains,” Murphy said.
