Just after the start of the academic year, Curry Public Safety found themselves responding to an incident at the First Year residence hall on the North side of campus. In the early morning hours of August 28th, “unknown” individuals entered North Campus Residence Hall (NCRH), knocking on doors and damaging some property, according to a statement released by the college.

This incident came on only the second week of classes while students were still settling in, which is a time where many students already feel an array of emotions because they are moving into a new setting and making the transition either to college or getting back into routine.

Erik Müürisepp, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, sent out an email later in the day speaking about what happened and what the community was doing in order to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future.

“A group of unknown individuals entered campus over a fence in the north corner of campus and entered North Campus Residence Hall where they knocked on some room doors, damaged a sign, and pulled the fire alarm,” the email stated. “They then left the campus.”

As a result of alarms being pulled, first responders were notified and responded to the scene, including Milton Police and Fire.

Müürisepp added, “The campus has extensive video surveillance, and these videos are being reviewed by law enforcement.”

Public Safety Director, Paul King, told The Currier Times that the incident has prompted new levels of security.

“We have taken additional measures so that this does not happen again,” said King. “We have put additional fencing and have trimmed the brush so that cameras have a more clear view of the campus property.”

With the additional features in place, King does not see anything like this happening again and there have been no repeat events.

Students hearing this news are definitely shaken up a little. Andrew Daponte, a Business major from the class of 2026, said it was a surprise.

“While I was not living in NCRH at the time, it was a little unsettling to hear that it happened, but things have seemed fine now,” said Daponte. “I feel pretty safe here, this seems to be a freak incident, but otherwise it is relatively safe and quiet.”

The email that the school sent out to students and faculty said that Public Safety would be making more of a presence on campus and that the Milton Police department will be patrolling the campus during the day and have an officer stationed on campus overnight.

The school also added, “We encourage any student, faculty or staff member to report any information…to Public Safety. We remind all students and community members to keep cars and valuables locked, and to avoid propping open doors to residence halls or providing access to individuals unknown to them.”

Shannon Muldoon, a Psychology major from the class of 2025 said she was happy law enforcement is involved.

“I felt very concerned and worried for everyone’s safety,” said Muldoon. “I was scared that this kind of event would happen again.”

Muldoon added, “I feel safer knowing that Milton police are here in case of another incident occurring.”

While this incident occurred a few weeks ago now, the school is still actively investigating along with the Milton Police Department. Boston Police are also working to identify a few individuals of interest, however, there has been no further update.
