Fun, Fall Lipsticks

BY ANA FLORES // OCT. 13, 2015 //

Everyone knows that it’s the season of pumpkin spice and everything nice. But for a beauty blogger, fall is all about dark, luscious lipsticks.

Fall is the time of the year to rock burgundy, maroon and dark plum everything. Personally, I have been rocking plum nail polish since September 1st. New England is the epicenter of everything fall. In Texas, where I’m from, no one would dare to opt for the plum nail polish until much later in the season.

In early September, I cleaned and stored my summer makeup and gladly welcomed my dark lipsticks and brown eyeshadows.

My everyday look revolves around my lipstick. I can forget to fill in my eyebrows or to apply mascara, but I never forget to apply lipstick. As I always say, lipstick is the staple to a healthy and beautiful smile!

My current favorite fall lipsticks are from the drugstore! I’ve definitely found some hidden drugstore gems this past month.

Maybelline Color Sensational – #425 Plum Paradise

If you aren’t yet comfortable wearing bold plum tones, this is definitely a great lipstick to start experimenting with. The color is more of a sheer, pinky plum with a lot of shimmer and it’s not too frosty either. The color stays on for about four or five hours, so it’s definitely a steal for $6!

L’Oréal Color Riche – #839 Cinnamon Toast

This is a very festive fall color! I personally love this color because it’s not your typical dark red. It has hints of orange and brown, which makes it absolutely gorgeous. The color ends up looking opaque with a hint of gloss. One thing I love about this lipstick is that it looks glossy, but it’s not sticky. It even makes my lips look plump! Overall, the L’Oréal Color Riche Collection is always a safe bet because it’s a very reliable brand.

ColourPop – Bichette (Matte)

Colourpop isn’t sold in American drugstores, but you can order it online. It is one of my favorite affordable lipstick brands. However, this color is not for the faint of heart. It is very bold and very VAVAVOOM! I personally wouldn’t wear it for a daytime look, because it’s very pigmented and doesn’t flow with my everyday makeup style. But if you’re comfortable going for a bolder look, I would definitely recommend this product! The thing I love about this particular matte collection by ColourPop is that the lipsticks apply super creamy, but have a matte finish. I would recommend this brand if you’ve never worn a matte lipstick.

Rimmel Moisture – #820 Cherrylicious

I wear this color during the day and night. The formula glides on like a dream! It’s very easy to apply and it does not bleed, so if you don’t know how to apply lipstick evenly this is the collection you want to practice with. I have repurchased this color twice now because it’s a dark magenta with a hint of plum. I haven’t found any other product like it.

Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte – #657 Nude Nuance

This color is very creamy and pigmented. The matteness of this lipstick isn’t the greatest, but it’s a good option if you’re looking for pigmentation. The creaminess won’t accentuate any dry patches on your lips or lines, which is always something to be cautious of when shopping for a matte lipstick. In comparison to Colourpop, this formula isn’t very mattifying, but the color itself is one of a kind and it’s much easier to apply. This formula is very beginner friendly and it applies evenly. I have this color in matte and in glossy finish. Although, I definitely prefer the matte finish!

This fall, matte lipsticks are in and I will definitely be looking for even more matte lipsticks to add to my collection!

Loving the Skin You’re In

Ask any woman about her looks and I guarantee she will have A LOT to say.

We’ve all been there. We’ve tested out the “7 Day Diet” or some similar fad. We’ve examined each and every one of our flaws in the mirror. We’ve asked the infamous question, “Does this make me look fat?” The question is “why?”

For the past 55 years, Barbie dolls have represented female perfection to young girls. But it’s an unobtainable and dangerously unrealistic standard of beauty. A student at Hamilton College in New York recently created a life-sized Barbie to show the reality of the doll’s unproportioned body.

Dove has promoted self confidence with its various ad campaigns that highlight "real" women's body types.

Standing nearly 6 feet tall, the Barbie has a 39-inch bust, 18-inch waist, and 33-inch hips. She weighs 110 pounds with a body-mass index of 16.24, meaning she would be severely anorexic. This “perfect” young lady would have to crawl of all fours to get around because of her body proportions!

As we get older, popular standards of “beauty” are determined through computerized advertisements, plastic surgeries and the cosmetic budgets of A-list celebrities. For the average person, however, these looks are unrealistic and unattainable. No matter how much make-up, dietary supplements or Spanx you buy, there seems to be no way to achieve the perfect big butt, firm boobs, tall and leggy look many women so desire.

So I suggest a revolutionary idea: Embrace yourself. Enjoy the things that make you stand out. Love you for you. Yes, it’s OK to change up your diet—as long as you’re going about it correctly and for your health. Yes, it’s OK to want to lose weight—as long as you’re going about it correctly and for your health. Are you sensing a pattern here?

In an article on the lifestyle and pop culture website, senior editor Heather Hogan calls on women to be proud of their imperfections. “Why do we want to cover up the things that make us us?” she writes. “Our ‘imperfections’ tell our stories. If our bodies aren’t flawless, it’s because we’ve lived.”

Learning to love yourself is easier than you might think, and it only takes a few steps.

Starting tomorrow, Valentine’s Day, commit to no longer picking yourself apart. Take care of your body in a safe and healthy way. And know that there are a million different kinds of beautiful. Be your own standard.

Release Your Stress

BY VANESSA KELLY // MAY 4, 2012 //

Finals are approaching and stress levels have shot up a ton. We are pulling all nighters and spending most of our time in our room or the library studying our butt off. Sleep is the last opinion, and it’s getting to be a problem.

Girls, don’t worry about dressing to impress, it’s time to de-stress. There are many ways to be comfy and still look cute—Curry boys know you are stressed with work because they are, too—and here are three good places to start:

1. Wear yoga pants. But it’s cute if you wear a fitted tank or V-neck with a cute, colorful fitted hoodie with them so you feel both cute and comfy. We all know that every Curry girl owns a pair of yoga pants. Another way to be comfy and cute is to wear a pair of skinny jeans and simple plain neutral colored t-shirt or a patterned V-neck shirt. I suggest you add a pattern or colorful scarf to the outfit. It will give you a cute accessory to look forward to and will compliment your face.

2. Girls feel gross when they just wear sweats all day—mostly because they are self conscious of their hair and face. But a few quick do’s can solve those bad hair days. The easiest solution is a braid. A French braid is ideal because it’s out of your face and keeps your hair intact. French braids are the tights of braids, so those loose strands won’t be a bother. If you’re not into the French look, another opinion is the fish tail. The fish tail is cute and unique and even though you think it’s just a hairstyle to get off my face, others will be impress that you had the time to do it. Lastly, if you have done the braid look too many times this week, tie your hair back in a low bun. It’s simple and sophisticated.

3. Stop worrying, you look beautiful. I know you feel naked when you leave your dorm without make up on. I also know how it feels when you don’t want to look like your putting too much makeup on because you have that many zits. So, on your study break, grab some of your friends and have a mini spa night. It doesn’t have to be that long, but it will be a great way for all of you to relax and clear up your skin at the same time.

* Wash your face, then dab honey (right from the jar) all over and relax for 15 minutes. It smells good and it’s a great antioxidant. Your skin will be baby-soft, and it reduces redness, too. I was amazed when I tried it.

* Wash your face, then dab plain, unflavored yogurt all over. It’s a natural source of alpha hydroxyl acid. Your pores will disappear.

*Before washing your hair, massage jojoba oil into your scalp, put on a cap, and then relax for 15 minutes. Jojoba removes build-up from your scalp, prevents dandruff, and conditions your hair.

Release some stress with your friends! You will all do well on your exams, but you need to relax or you will be very uptight and will probably freak out on stupid things. Do yourself a favor: relax!
