College Fashion 101: What to Wear, Everyday Style

BY COURTNEY LEE // SEPT. 30, 2013 //

“What to wear, what to wear?” It’s one of the biggest questions in the college world.

Dress up or dress down? Look fancy or hobo chic? I am here to help college-aged students unwrap some fashion secrets, including how to look cute and trendy while on a budget.

The examples in today’s blog are mainly tailored—get it?—for women, but my next blog will have some ideas and suggestion for men, too. Many of the clothing ideas are just some basics that most girls or guys already own. And if you don’t, that’s OK. I will let you know the places and websites to find the best deals and cutest outfits on the cheap.

Monday
For the beginning of the week, you must start off strong. Dress up your Monday with some fun, bright colors. Try bright neon colors because they are the fashion statement for this year’s fall season. For example, an outfit I would wear includes a bright neon pink oversized sweater, matched with some black leggings and combat boots.

Oversized sweaters are in this fall season.

Tuesday
On Tuesday, I would recommend going with something a little more cute and playful. Oversized sweaters are in this fall season, so they’re a must-have. For example, try an oversized sweater with some black pants and nice red Keds (or whatever color matches your sweater).

Wednesday
Take a turn to the past and revisit the ’90s. Find some high-waist pants and a cropped sweater. The sweater in the link is a great deal for only $18. Keep it simple with some nice toms or combat boots.

Thursday
Let’s do a nice comfy Thursday. Sweat pants can be hit or miss; it depends on the way you dress it up. Find your favorite sweat pants—not too baggie—find a fitted, long-sleeve shirt and add a nice scarf. Tah dah!

Friday
Let’s do it extra casual, but still add a girly end of the week touch. Find your favorite pair of jeans that you only wear on special occasions. Then, a warm, long- sleeve shirt, a jean vest and scarf, and you are good to start your weekend on a high!

An awesome place to get the latest and trendiest clothes for fall is Foreever21, and for inspiration check out Seventeen.com. And remember, your style requires your own twists.

Release Your Stress

BY VANESSA KELLY // MAY 4, 2012 //

Finals are approaching and stress levels have shot up a ton. We are pulling all nighters and spending most of our time in our room or the library studying our butt off. Sleep is the last opinion, and it’s getting to be a problem.

Girls, don’t worry about dressing to impress, it’s time to de-stress. There are many ways to be comfy and still look cute—Curry boys know you are stressed with work because they are, too—and here are three good places to start:

1. Wear yoga pants. But it’s cute if you wear a fitted tank or V-neck with a cute, colorful fitted hoodie with them so you feel both cute and comfy. We all know that every Curry girl owns a pair of yoga pants. Another way to be comfy and cute is to wear a pair of skinny jeans and simple plain neutral colored t-shirt or a patterned V-neck shirt. I suggest you add a pattern or colorful scarf to the outfit. It will give you a cute accessory to look forward to and will compliment your face.

2. Girls feel gross when they just wear sweats all day—mostly because they are self conscious of their hair and face. But a few quick do’s can solve those bad hair days. The easiest solution is a braid. A French braid is ideal because it’s out of your face and keeps your hair intact. French braids are the tights of braids, so those loose strands won’t be a bother. If you’re not into the French look, another opinion is the fish tail. The fish tail is cute and unique and even though you think it’s just a hairstyle to get off my face, others will be impress that you had the time to do it. Lastly, if you have done the braid look too many times this week, tie your hair back in a low bun. It’s simple and sophisticated.

3. Stop worrying, you look beautiful. I know you feel naked when you leave your dorm without make up on. I also know how it feels when you don’t want to look like your putting too much makeup on because you have that many zits. So, on your study break, grab some of your friends and have a mini spa night. It doesn’t have to be that long, but it will be a great way for all of you to relax and clear up your skin at the same time.

* Wash your face, then dab honey (right from the jar) all over and relax for 15 minutes. It smells good and it’s a great antioxidant. Your skin will be baby-soft, and it reduces redness, too. I was amazed when I tried it.

* Wash your face, then dab plain, unflavored yogurt all over. It’s a natural source of alpha hydroxyl acid. Your pores will disappear.

*Before washing your hair, massage jojoba oil into your scalp, put on a cap, and then relax for 15 minutes. Jojoba removes build-up from your scalp, prevents dandruff, and conditions your hair.

Release some stress with your friends! You will all do well on your exams, but you need to relax or you will be very uptight and will probably freak out on stupid things. Do yourself a favor: relax!

Simple Do’s and Don’ts of Curry College Fashion

BY VANESSA KELLY // APRIL 18, 2012 //

The following are some simple do’s and don’ts to get you through the year, no matter what time of year it is. There are only a few rules you need to follow:

DO — dress up once in awhile for class. Especially boys!
I understand it’s more comfortable to wear your T-shirt and sweat pants to class, but if you wore a nice shirt and khakis one day just for kicks I promise you will get at least one or two compliments on your outfit. So, the next time you’re complaining about a bad day while wearing your sweats, try to look nice instead. Maybe that bad day could turn out OK thanks to a few compliments girls will give you.

Compliments are always a confidence booster.

**TIP: Quick easy steps to turn a sloppy T-shirt and baggy sweat pants look into something better: Switch those baggy sweats to a comfortable pair of jeans. Then change that typical Curry athletic T-shirt to a simple V-neck shirt with a fitted hoodie over it. You will still be comfy, but also looking handsome all day. Trust me, the girls will appreciate it. **

Do wear cologne or perfume. Deodorant usually does the job, but that extra smell is the real attention-getter.

I can tell when a guy tries, and puts on some cologne. It’s one of those things where they will do a second check on you.  Like, a girl might think, “ooo he’s cute. “ then they will pass each other, and she will get that whiff of sweet sexiness. Her thought process will end with thinking, “and he smells delicious.” It goes the same for boys to girls.

**Tip: Girls, when applying perfume. Make sure you apply it on the back of the neck because if someone hugs you, they will smell your delightful perfume. Good way to get their attention and that smell will remind them of you. **

Don’t wear socks and sandals in public. How many times do I have to say this? It will never be in style, nor will you ever look sexy like that. Instead, wear sneakers, Uggs or sandals without the socks, or even go bare foot. Seriously, I rather see you walking barefoot then wear socks and sandals.

Don’t wear High heels.  Why would you put yourself through that pain? The walk to Kennedy is hard enough in flats. Imagine the blisters you will get from that. Unless you have a job interview in five minutes or your shift is coming up at the topless bar downtown, there is absolutely no reason to trek to Fundamentals of Communication in heels made for the red carpet of a porn convention.[1]

**Tip If you want to wear cute shoes: Instead of heels, wear cute flats or moccasins. Those are perfect for the coming spring weather.
